Chicago Mobiles

6

Amid the squalor beneath the train tracks I found some unlikely art evidently created by those who make their homes there. Dangling from the underpass ceiling were these objects fashioned from scraps of metal, fabric, etc. Whether to simply put their creative talents to work or to thumb their noses at establishment art venues is still an open question. Maybe next summer I'll track down someone there who knows.

I was struck with how I viewed these items in contrast with the city-built structures in the neighborhood. If these mobiles are trash what does the structures signify? Art-wise to me they are much the same. I suppose the mobiles will outlast the structures because in time the structures will become the raw materials of the mobiles, given that there will still be artists living in the underpasses. And someone to photograph them.
