The Salton Sea

The Salton Sea, located in California about 4 hours west of Phoenix, occupies a desert basin and covers an area of 376 square miles. It is unique in being 227 feet below sea level and is maintaining its water level despite the sparce precipitation of less than 3 inches per year.

The area had fallen into bad economic times and is dotted with deserted and decaying buildings and infrastructure.

I made these images on April 8, 2010.
